Well if Obama is re-elected in 2102, he'd probably be some kind of God or something. Thats almost 100 years from now.
But I do think it's a really good question though. It would be very very interesting. I think Texas would go first.
But the problem is a succession would have worked 200 years ago but now everything is too intertwined. Say if Texas did seceed, what would they do about Fort Bragg and Fort Hood? Would you have another nation's military bases (the US) in your territory? I mean President Obama could easily invade the Nation of Texas and take it back over. Or what if Virginia seceeded? I don't think they'd want the largest Naval base in the world on their land.
I think it's too dangerous to seceed from the Union. The U.S. is way to powerful to be on the other side of the firing line against.
But Governor Perry could try it if his numbers (political) fall. Won't ever happen though.
Good question.
If the near west nations seceeded, it would be easy. They control and house nearly all the land based nuclear weapons. The US proper would be powerless.
I really do not think that Obama has a chance at re-electoin in 2012, so it is somewhat irrelevent. However, if he grants 30-40 million illegals amnesty and is able to secure thier vote, he might have a chance. Given this as his only chance, of course many states would leave the Union, as there would be no reason to be a part of the US any longer. When a president can essentially re-elect himself over and over again, the whole system has failed and needs to be abandoned.
Let's see what 2012 holds. If there are fair elections and no illegal immigrant votes, the process will unfold and he will be ejected from office. If Obama fails to hold fair elections, then of course states will leave the Union.
We could extend the notion of secession and make up all kinds of fascinating games. For example, why should anyone assume that a bunch of states could secede from the United States, and then everything would be peaches & cream. Suppose they didn't get along...
Does Oklahoma declare war on Texas? Or do they see themselves at a disadvantage and form an alliance with New Mexico? Will California sit idly by and allow such a thing to happen? Meanwhile, a little farther to the north, Idaho and Montana are having difficulties...
Talk about sitting back and watching the fireworks...and all because a handful of agitators didn't like President Obama!
If the conservative states need to be taught a second lesson, then so be it. They should know that if they do so, it won't work out any better than last time.
Thats right a tyrant that does not believe in freedom or self rule will force them back into the union. Funny how both party democracy worshipers give lip service to freedom but they do not really mean it. Is it freedom to force a state to be part of a union if they find it deplorable and can do better on their own?

And of course if you're wrong, and he wins fair and square as he did in '08, you'll be the first to say so, right?
to those that say "impossible", please do not say that. after all the UK prbably thought that secession was impossible with the colonies as well.
secession is a viable option for each and every state of the union, and I believe that if a secession of 1 or more states would happen, it might actually bring aabout more freedom for the states themselves.
That's been tried before. It didn't work out well for those states.
nukes did not exist either in the 1860's.
