What is the subaru situation up in Portland?

I just thought about this as a drove 30 minutes to drop off my 98 Subaru Impreza Outback off at one of the few Subaru knowledgeable shops around for a tune up/tranny flush/timing belt replacement/new wheel bearings for the big drive up.

The big problem I've had (not so much in SF, but definitely down here in San Diego) is that alot of shops (besides a dealership that over charges) don't know how to deal with my AWD transmission/parts. I was told a year ago my transmission went out when in reality, a little filter in it went bad.

I'll also be on the market for a new subaru sometime within the next 1-2 years. (I want to go big with the PREZ Outback or Forester!)

Down here, there just arn't a lot of them, so finding one to buy outside of a dealer is difficult. When my mom bought her 07 Outback, she ended up flying to Ashland from San Diego!

I'm also a member of the 3-7 member subaru group down here and we have a lot of fun camping and hiking.

I think there are about 5-6 Subaru dealers within the Portland Metro area -- and that's just the dealers, that's not counting the independent repair shops.

Something about moving to Oregon that makes you want to buy a Scoobie and outfit it with some Thule or Yakima roof racks. Who cares about wind resistance decreasing gas mileage. It's just that cool! I'm not one to stereotype but there might be some truth to the Subaru & Portland connection. You'll fit right in.

EDIT: I want a WRX.

You'll be fine in Portland. I have an Outback that I use when I'm in Alaska; you see them all over up here. No one buys them to be "cool" up here; they just seem to work well in this type of country. In Oregon it seems that the Subarus have a lot of the same bumper stickers.

Subaru Sales by State for August and YTD - NASIOC

An old link, but interesting data and conversation about Subaru sales concentration by state. Oregon is one of the highest, per capita, in the US... which makes sense when you think about how many people living in the area want/need to use their vehicles.

While waiting for the bus in the morning I used to like to count the models of cars that I would see. Subaru Outbacks were at the very top of the list.

Subaru Outbacks are the official state car of Oregon! Or if not, they should be!

If it's green, good luck figuring out which one is yours in a large parking lot up here.
