Does sales tax exist in this state? I've heard different things about this.. I'm not referring to state income taxes, just sales tax.. Are certain businesses allowed to charge them in some places even if they don't exist here? Whats the truth? Or are there just certain types of sales tax enforced?

In some of the more rural counties, they're debating a sales tax to cover lost revenues so they can pay for police coverage and other things.

If you're not an Oregon resident, you will have to pay the sales tax on things like cars. I'm not sure if you'll get charged at purchase or at registration though.

There's no law against sales tax, and local government can implement one if the want to. Competition keeps them from doing that. People will just drive to the next county to do their shopping. Plus, a sales tax is very politically unpopular in the state. Pushing for a sales tax has ended a lot of politicians' careers.

Eh??? If you are a resident of a state that has a sales tax (usually Washington) you will pay WA's sales tax on the purchase. That collection is very efficient because the purchaser must register the car in WA. Actually if you are an Oregon resident and move to WA they assess a tax based on a crazy imputed value of the used car. Been there, paid that.

Actually, by WA law, Washington residents are supposed to pay a 'use tax' to WA if they didn't pay WA sales tax. Hardly anyone does.

Yes, there is sales tax in Oregon. But only in Ashland (county or city law?) on prepared meals.

I think it is just the city to pay for sewer plant upgrades. What is eaten eventually is deposited.

In Ashland, it's classified as a "Food & Beverage Tax" not a sales tax.

Yet another positive reason for my move! My entire life, sales tax has been the bane of my existence. I despise it! Its an almost physical blow whenever I have to pay it! I NEVER buy anything(besides food) new, always used from individuals to AVOID paying sales tax! I have to grind my teeth together everytime I pay it!
