A friend of my wife's once told me about her first day in Oregon. She, a Louisiana native, and her new husband, an Oregon native, arrived in Tillamook and looked at the house they would soon move into. She asked how soon they could get the exterminator out. He asked why she thought they needed an exterminator. She looked at him like he was crazy and said, "to get rid of the bugs, of course." He told her to go sit in the front yard for ten minutes. Not in a chair, right on the grass. She gave him another look but went and sat. Ten minutes later she came to him with her eyes wide and exclaimed, "There are no bugs here!"

I've lived here about 18 months, and have yet to see one. Back in Ohio, the only place I ever had them is when I lived in a run-down apartment complex while in college. Of course, keeping our house very clean tended to turn them off.

I'm more impressed (disgusted?) by the quantity of spiders here. I swear our house looks like a scene from Arachnaphobia at times. Stepping on slugs in the back yard isn't exactly appealing either.

I see lots of spiders but I like them. So does my cat. But slugs. Ugh! Roaches, not since the corpse I mentioned I saw that one time.

Thought of interjecting this joke, but silly me, of course someone would jump in ahead of me.

I'll have to remember that one the next time I do standup.

"So how are the roaches in Portland?"

"Not bad as long as nobody bogarts the doobe!"

It could be a good Portlandia line.
