Room renting is pretty much your only option.

Tiny houses are illegal in the city of Portland, as they are in most other large cities. Some places you can get around zoning codes by putting them on wheels and parking them in a driveway or backyard, but Portland has an ordinance against living in a vehicle or trailer on a residential lot, thus they are illegal. Theres a Tiny House Hotel in town that legally operates as a business to provide weekend accommodations to tourists, but you can't legally *live* in a tiny house here.

About the cheapest housing you'll find in a non-shared situation, is an RV park such as the Jantzen Beach RV Park, but even then monthly rent is $485 a month, you have to own a 1998 or newer RV, and there is a year long waiting list.

Welcome to Portland where theres literally 1001 young people moving here every day, driving up housing costs.

An ADU is about the only way around the tiny house limitations in Portland.

And a standard ADU zoning element is that you can rent one but you cannot buy one, which inherently detracts from affordability.

Well if one is trying to live cheaply, then renting will probably be the only option anyway.

That doesn't change the fact that minimum wage in Oregon is still $9.25/hr. If they both had minimum wage jobs and working at least 40 hours each, they would both be bringing home a combined amount of $2800.
