Is/are there ways to live for two people in Portland for under 400 dollars a month? Or is asking that about as ridiculous as asking a doctor to give you more arms?

I wish I could make this sound more intricate and articulate, but unfortunately that's the biggest question I have in that it pertains to the feasibility of moving at all.

I'm very thankful that you read this at all even if you don't have an answer.

The general consensus will probably be that this is impossible, however...if the two of you rent one room in a larger house with other housemates to split the rent with and subsist on a super low-cost diet, this might be (barely) possible. Otherwise, the problem will be that you will be spending all your budget on rent. If you look on Craigslist you will find a few units here and there in Portland for $350-400 but this leaves you with little or nothing for food...

ya, food, rent, electricity, transportation, water, sewer, garbage, I think it'd be awful hard to have two people living on that. Youd probably be mighty thin at the end of the month!! (hummmm.....side note, thought to self....hummmmm lol)
just curious, how is it two people are only bringing in 400.00month between both? I work part-time and bring in more than that.
Best of luck to you!
Tiffany

If you're getting your housing for free, yes. Otherwise, no.

I can't think of anyplace in this country that I know of where you can live as cheaply as that (unless, as ott said ) , you are not paying anything for housing.

I think you would be hard pressed to live on $400 a week in Portland. I mean live, not merely survive. Having a job sure helps a lot.

You could pull it off in the south. Ive scouted some places out that would be great cheap retirement areas. Id simply winter there and travel in the spring and summer. Not the most fascinating locations but liveable.

I know a young couple who lived in San Francisco - half the time in their car and half the time in hotels in the Mission District. I asked her if there were vermin, and she said yes! But we wanted to be in San Francisco.

Given that two people can't live on $400 per month, how cheaply can they? What are the smartest options? Is room-renting the only thing you can do cheaply? That has so many complications....What about tiny homes?
