It seems like things tend to be more scattered around town in Portland's case. If I had to choose, I'd probably say Burnside though it's also a residential street after a certain point. Hawthorne is possibly the most "fun" part of Portland but I think of it as more of a shopping/"daylife" street than a hot spot for nightlife. It's generally pretty deserted at night.

NW 21/23rd are somewhat happening but are oriented towards the upper class.

Funny how the "Skid Row" (originally Skid Road) that Burnside was, and in many ways still is, has changed to the hoot 'n' holler crowds plapen. Your looking for "Old Town" from China Town to the Skidmoore District. I always thought that was a fitting name.

You want 2nd to 6th and Couch, Burnside, Davis, Brodway and Everett. mostly 000 to 200 addresses.

Are there any nightclubs where a person can just dance to top 40 music? Or is it all hipstery music and live bands, etc?

The Old Town/Chinatown nightlife area has a lot of standard issue dance clubs. Some of them are sort of meat markets, but it's pretty much the hip hop/pop that you hear everywhere.

Then there's a lot of other places that have DJ nights that play a wide variety of music--Lola's Room at the Crystal Ballroom has nights where they play just 80s or 90s music or newer stuff--and then there's all the other places that play more eclectic stuff like bhanga or old soul music or so on... Holocene is the hipster dance club, though they play 90s stuff as well.

I don't like to dance though unless my girlfriend really drags me out to, so I just like chilling in jazz clubs or going to see rock shows or bluegrass for the most part these days...

You trying to figure out where to avoid? Current top 40 is garbage.

That's what's up. Any recommendations for any good venues/clubs where you're seeing that kind of music would be much appreciated.
