Anyone know how the driving conditions are on I-5 today going up north from Portland Airport to LongView? Is it safe to drive? I am flying in today and need to take that route later today evening around 6 pm. Are chains required? (hope not!). Looks like the weather is pretty bad out there though I am not sure what the driving/road conditions will be later today.

Almost a stupid question. Watch the news and stay put. Don't count on landing at Portland.

I've been stuck on my suburban mountain for two days so I don't know how those roads are. These traffic cams show some people are braving the elements through there.

A lot of people getting towed, and the storage bill for abandoning your vehicle means a lot of people will be walking a lot in the future.

The airport isn't having too many delays and there aren't any cancellations so far today

Portland Intl Airport (Portland, OR) KPDX / PDX Flight Tracker

The drive, though, could be an issue, as the forecast has icing and high wind warnings for the Gorge, which can make I5 and I205 bridges icy. The bridges were closed for bits of Friday although they are open so far today. The timing of the warmer rain and rising temps makes it really hard to predict what this evening will be like. If the temps come up to the high 30s, the precip will fall as rain and the drive should be just very slow. If the temps don't rise much and the rain turns to freezing rain or sleet it could very well mean closure and certainly chains required.

By Tuesday it should just be rain and in the 40s, so you may have to stay near the airport and drive in Tuesday morning rather than Monday night or delay your flight until Tuesday. It's probably cheaper to pay the fees and reschedule the flight than it is to get a room near the airport for Monday night, particularly in this weather.

Interesting as channel 12 just said there were 14 cancellations at PDX.

I think that was yesterday and very early this morning. Flightaware gets their info direct from the various towers (they are generally more accurate than the individual airlines websites).

The Statesman Journal is also reporting cancellations.

For Oregon driving, check tripcheck.org - it's the ODOT travel site. You can also click on the cameras to see what it's actually like.

Going south has improved. Even my street was plowed and I am the last house in the city.
