If money was no object, what would be your dream neighborhood, home and location to live in Portland and why? My dream is to buy a house around SE 30th, between Belmont and Hawthorne. My dream home:

That is a great location, I think it would be Overlook for me and my wife if we could buy anywhere. Either in an old craftsman or a new northwest modern home.

In the Montavilla area, going up the slope of Mt. Tabor, with a view of Mt. Hood.

Neighborhoods like Council Crest, Laurelhurst, and Eastmoreland are stunning, but the type of people that tend to live there would make for insufferable neighbors. I would want some place more laid back like the area between Division and Hawthorne in the 30's or 40's, or possibly Multnomah Village. Any old house with a big porch would do. Craftsman bungalow, Old Portland-style foursquare, Colonial Revival, or Victorian, doesn't matter. Just something with a little bit of character and grandeur in a nice, leafy neighborhood. Preference would be for a fixer so I could restore it inside and out and custom update the kitchen and bathrooms to my taste.

As you can tell, I've done a lot of dreaming. And probably will continue to do so considering the housing costs in Portland...

Gorgeous house, just like a lot of houses that are scattered around my neighborhood down here interspersed with the Spanish Revivals like mine. That looks like it would be a great area. We've only visited but there seems to be a whole bunch of beautiful (and seemingly great) neighborhoods, Nob Hill, Hollywood, Sellwood (of which our neighborhood supposedly most resembles in vibe).

It will be interesting to see what others think that know more than I, such as backdrifter above, as we occasionally get an itch to move up there and escape the unrelenting sun. I don't know exactly what backdrifter is talking about but assume it would be like me describing some of the beautiful and known neighborhoods down here as also definitely not having the coolest residents or having a friendly, approachable vibe.

We would want one similar to described in the post above, a little funky and friendly and also super convenient to downtown whichever those are (like our neighborhood here) it would seem SE 30th is.

Eric, I'm with you, that house in that neighborhood would be terrific. I love the bungalow style and that area is where I already do many things I enjoy. Now I'll dream about that house picture you posted...

How much would you be willing to pay for the above dream house in that neighborhood?

Hope you got some deep full pockets.

That's the type of house EVERYONE new to Portland dreams of having.

It's not going to come cheaply (anywhere close below 450k) especially if renovated.

But to stay on topic, my dream house would be anything decent and liveable, right in the middle of a secluded 40-60 acres outside of Portland.
After 30 years of dreaming about it, I finally got it.
All paid for.

And, believe me, Life is Good.

And that is why I support the urban growth boundary. Without it, by the time you saved up the money, that all would have been sprawling suburbs.

I'm astonished when people criticize it. Sure, no system is perfect, but come to Los Angeles if you want to see what lack of urban planning and unchecked sprawl do to a city.
