I have only been once a few years back on vacation and fell in love. Now me and my hubby are moving ( you might have read and responded to some of my other posts, thx) here and I dont want to look out of place. I love my fashion, so what does a trendy mid twenty's lady wear? Anything goes or are there certain things that women stick to? Ps: I love my wellies, jeans and sweaters.

Portland is not known for fashion. People generally dress like slobs even when going out for a nice dinner.

You can even go completely nude in public as long as you're not doing it with the intention to sexually arouse.

Whatever she wants... This isn't a "dressed to the nines" type city like NYC or Vegas, but beyond that people are people anywhere you go. Some dress like slobs, some like the flower power, others are preppy Banana/Gap... no dress code, just be yourself and let others be themselves.

Though there is an inordinate amount of hemp and Birkenstocks here. Not sure if that's Portland's dress code or not.

You can dress any way you like ... if you are a fashionista, you can expect to be the best dressed person pretty much anywhere you go. The most fashionably dressed young women in Portland, that I've seen, are over in NW (Pearl area and Nob Hill). They dress kind of like ... what you imagine a prep school educated girl dating a rock band lead singer would dress like. I guess. Portlanders pretty much wear jeans and hiking attire. Super casual. Dressed up here usually looks like an REI mannequin.

Haha, is it possible to go nude and not arouse someone?

As frumpy as possible. Any shirts with buttons (not counting flannel) and chances are you will be overdressed.

Portland is very casual. When we were interviewing here I forgot nice pants for one dinner and so I had to wear jeans. We went to a very nice restaurant and about 50% of the people were wearing jeans and casual shoes. Anything goes here at all times-that is what is great about Portland. No one cares.

I wouldn't say "anything" goes, it does depend on the crowd. Nice khakis, shirt with a collar and a blazer is dress-up in almost every venue. Shoes??? Just wear a pair in decent condition (this is the home-town of two major footwear manufacturers after all).

There are situations where a New York style suit and tie is expected but you will know well in advance.

so very true, but there are the 'alternative' dressers (not REI, but really granola)

Oh yes, very possible in Portland. (as well as nude beaches in much of the world), but Portland in particular would NOT be known for 'HOT BODS' You have to look really hard to find someone who is 'fixed up' just 'cause they're classy. Seattle, on the other hand is also quite casual, BUT it is more normal to dress classy for work and dinners (I found myself QUITE 'underdressed' at a business luncheon in Seattle last week, even with some of my nicer clothes). Portland it is VERY UNLIKELY to dress classy for anything. Tweed wrap skirts, sandals, wool socks - that's classy for Portland.
