I know....and my DS is a terrible speller...I've brought that up...he just thinks it's "the coolest name EVER" LOL - it's just his 16 yo sense of humor...

You should make him go by that for a week during the summer. And during that week have lots of things that require his new "signature". It will cure him of his "coolest name ever" and it might even be good for a little laugh.
On a lighter note...my son has a traditional name. Our last name is not common but not uncommon....He (being 16) likes to tell me he wishes he had a "cooler" name....his name of choice? Umberto Houshmandzadeh - he chose the first name from a baseball player and the last name from a football player...He tells me that's what he's going to name his child..."if it's a girl" LOL....
Tell him if he wants a "cool football player name" he should choose Fitzgerald. (If you aren't a fan and you come up with that he'll look at you twice and wonder how you suddenly got so cool yourself.)
Back to the original topic: Another thing when picking names. Avoid alliteration between first names. "Peggy Pickles" sounds cute when she's an infant, but she'll be less-than-thrilled in high school. Speaking from exerience here.

I am a fan but I have to say..it has nothing to do with the player..he seriously just likes saying the name...We are not Seahawks fans.
I like ethnic names. My sons have very Jewish sounding names, but they are all pretty mainstream. So-if you are going for a French name that is different but not bizare how about:
Andre
Bernard
Antoine
Claude
Emmanuel
George
Henry
Jacques
Marc
Martin
Philippe
Thomas
I don't usually like strange spellings but the French spelling of otherwise common names (like Philippe, or Marc) are recognizable, especially with a French last name.
