It's usually a way of venting,

Personally when someone moans or winges at me about something petty or small I just start laughing which in turn winds them right up!!!

Sometimes finding a common subject to start a conversation with is hard to find.
You can only use the weather and nice clothes for so long but aches and pains on an ongoing souce of material.
