Sometimes negative thoughts jump into my head out of nowhere it seems. It is easier said than done to just not think of them when they are worming around in a persons head. I suppose there are probably as many different opinions on this subject as there are people. What is your method of dealing with negative thoughts?
You'll laugh at this, but often this works for me: I say to myself "What're ya gonna do?" (I think it's kind of a U.S. Jewish culture saying, but I can't be sure.) Then the thought goes away. Seriously.
I try to acknowledge them without getting caught up in them, same as negative emotions. They are just habits and genetics and will happen because the brain is wired to feel them. I try to be impersonal about the process.
I embrace negative thoughts as I would positive thoughts. You can't have one without the other. They'll run their course and hopefully provide a learning experience.

Wellll...I can't say that my "negative thoughts" jump into my head out of nowhere because typically it occurs while I am driving (doesn't matter where or when). Of course as soon as the "negative thought" occurs to me, I then give thanks to the good Lord for placing the offensive driver in my path as a reminder FOR me to be more careful with my speed, my attention, etc. etc.
It also works for any other type of offensive and negative thoughts which on occasion will rear their ugly head in my mind...not good, not good at all!
The worst is to wake at 3 a.m. then begin to review my (seemingly endless list of ...) 'problems'. After a few minutes of this I grab a computer, hit the web, and read something. I lose a lot of sleep this way.
I recall an old business executive/friend telling me he'd go to the living room and turn on the weather channel for an hour or two 'til he fell asleep again.
