There's the poster who trolls by making the same post over and over, under different names with slight changes to details, in order to make the same point or argument over and over. There's the guy who always likes to disagree simply to disagree. There's the guy who throws out controversial or nonsensical statements, outlandish stories or situations just to see who bites. And yeah, I've seen people called trolls because they express an unpopular opinion or don't play by the rules other people establish, see the thread about 'attacking nice people'
Some of it seems like obsessive behavior, some insecurity, some of it seems like a game of one upmanship, some of it just some bored kid on spring break, lol.
Been there on CD. I just don't go to those forums anymore. Who wants to visit one when the entire forum consists of trolls?

Everybody is a troll if we take all the definitions into consideration.

In a discussion of almost anything, which poster is the "troll," the one claiming some preposterous "fact" or the one who calls them out on such nonsense?

What is wrong with these worthless bags of DNA that are amongst us?

Sorry to be blunt but I'm just so sick of the very vocal minority at times.....
So, trolls = vocal minority? Not my idea of a troll, nor do I think most people would equate the two.

As for positive stories, sure; but life is positive and negative. I'm not reading C-D for escape so I like content that reflects the ups and the downs of real life.

I thought it was a poster who made inflamatory remark to stir the pot. Then waits to see what bites at it?
I could be wrong ....

As to the ones I've suspected I tend to sense most carrying the "inciting" war mindset, enjoy the illusion of power. Such as "I can "make" xyz be so angry/hurt/ etc by stating xyz right now". then watching for the boom!

Technically and psychologically our emotions are not empowered by anyone other then ourselves and our "re-action"

Note to these types: There are those out here who think differently than you and speaking the truth doesn't equate to 'trolling.'
I've seen a lot of this on FB. If someone adds a comment that differs from the majority - nothing hostile, just a difference in opinion - almost immediately the person is attacked by several who label them 'scum', 'troll', or other just as obnoxious labels, attacked by those who are insecure.

(Sorry, a bit off topic...it's just something that irks me.)

not just on FB, anyone with a different opinion on any sort of forum is immediately jumped upon.
I have been called a troll many times on forums because my opinion varies from the majority, their problem not mine.

No, you're not wrong. The meaning of 'troll' is someone who purposely enters into a discussion and attacks others, or adds inflammatory remarks simply to rile others, then sits back and watches the war begin. (Here's an example of one I witnessed in a forum a while back: A thread was started about vegetarianism. People exchanged thoughts, why or why not they followed a vegetarian diet, what vegetarian foods they believed were best, etc. Suddenly someone entered the discussion and started saying that all vegetarians are nothing but crazy idiots, all of their beliefs are wrong...then he went on to describe (in great detail) just how amazing bloody, extra rare beef is, and he began posting graphic pictures of cattle being slaughtered.) That's a troll. Why does this sort of person do such a thing? I've often felt that this sort of activity by an online poster simply projects just how immature and insecure they are. They have a need to feel superior, but the only way they can do so is by attacking anonymously...and they somehow get a thrill out of seeing others get upset, as they misinterpret others' anger as a conquest they've achieved by riling them up. It's extremely sad. And extremely common.

Someone interjecting their own thoughts that may differ from others is not trolling, yet is almost becoming accepted as being seen this way, which in itself is also sad. Both cases say a lot about our current culture.

Agreed. I just tend to be on FB more than other sites, but yes...it's prevalent everywhere.

This is true. For example, a person may see your post that I am quoting as being a "troll". If someone is intending to be a provocateur or smart-ass that incites something inflammatory, they certainly are trolling. I don't know how many times I have done this.
