You are correct.

A friend didn't get exactly what her ego was either...yet, she was so ruled by it for decades...reacting
to so many things, oh my gosh...so, when asked about it I said, " OK, rule of thumb...if it is kind, compassionate and forgiving,
mellow carefree peaceful and lighthearted that is coming from the higher self*...
if it is prideful, hurting, rude, bitter, angry, indignant resentful...and feels icky that, ol' friend, is the ego."

It's what keeps you from real happiness.
Ego is not always a bad thing...picture a little kid jumping into the water, popping
up gleefully asking,"DID YOU SEE that, mommy?!!!"
That's part of normal human growth and healthy individual identity here....later it can bite us in the butt.

-Scenario #1...handing a homeless person a buck...
Not handing the homeless person that buck.
Whatever logic and rationale was in your head that stopped you was the ego.

-#2 Having that 4th Martini....ego.
Stopping yourself...higher self.

Recognizing this sly enemy is step #1.

I wanna thank you all for posting. As usual was not able to give some reps.

If you have cancer and you are unhappy, that is not ego.

The pain for starters, the side effects of meds, the bills, watching your family suffer and fear losing you.

Buddhists will tell you most, if not all of these are ego. Any kind of unmet expectations are ego. Who told anyone that he will die old? There is no anxiety without ego, so medical bills are in ego category too. Worrying is forecasting the future. Who does look forward instead of being in present? Yeah, you guessed it. Ego.
