"Pie" was never supposed to live with us. This little black cat was born in my mother's back yard and was the runt of the litter. She spent the first ten years of her life with my mother, who sadly became unable to care for herself due to Alzheimer's. When my mother went to assisted living, it was always assumed that my sister would take the cat. However, my sister now had a cat of her own and didn't think the two would get along, so my wife and I "inherited" her that day.
She spent the next almost seven years with us, giving us love, friendship and plenty of entertainment. When I was bed-ridden from chemo for a period of time, it was Pie who sat on the bed next to me, keeping watch. When it was 5AM, she would come wake us up because it was feeding time - and when we rolled over to tried to go back to sleep, she was better than any alarm clock we ever had. And somehow, when it was 7:30 every evening (except Sundays) she knew to hop up on the bed to watch "The Office" ... and at 8PM when it was over, she left the bed and settled into her basket. And if the TV wasn't on, she'd look at me, look at the remote, and look at the TV until I turned it on for her so she could watch.
Pie crossed Rainbow Bridge this afternoon. Her kidney's were failing and at age 17, there was not much that we could do that wouldn't be stressful for her. We did try fluid therapy for a day, but it did not work.
Deepest sympathy on your loss, Charley. It is heartbreaking to say goodbye to a pet, even when you know it's time. Pie was lucky to have found such a kind and caring home. May your memories of that very special kitty keep her alive in your hearts forever.
Pie is running around with all the other pets and is in no pain or suffering. I hope Pie meets up with my Calie that I had to put down last Spring....
