02 NCAC 20B .0413 (the North Carolina Administrative Code) says: "A person shall not sell, offer for sale, or possess for the purpose of sale, any alcoholic beverage on State Fair property, except as permitted under this Rule. A person shall not possess or consume any alcoholic beverage at ticketed, commercial events that are open to the public on State Fair property except as permitted under this Rule. Except during the annual State Fair, beer and unfortified wine may be sold and consumed at the Gov. James B. Hunt, Jr. Horse Complex, subject to state alcoholic beverage control laws and regulations. Except during the annual State Fair, beer may be sold and consumed at Dorton Arena in connection with professional sporting events, subject to state alcoholic beverage control laws and regulations."

Rule was adopted in 1976, although there probably was a rule before then.

I'm not religious, I'm from the north, I do drink beer occasionally. I would not bring my small kids to the state fair if alcohol were served.

Alcohol being served at a state fair where thousands and thousands of people attend is definitely a recipe for disaster

Just curious.. should any event where thousands and thousands of people attend not serve alcohol?

There are behavioral incidents at the Fair already, and alcohol would probably increase the frequency. Plus the fairgrounds would start to smell after 10 days of spilled beer, unless there's a good rain.

I'm sure the NC wineries have asked the Dept of Ag about allowing retail wine sales, or at least wine tasting. Presumably the answer has been "no". Lots of teenagers who would try anything and everything to drink while their parents aren't around!

I guess I'm not getting this whole "recipe for disaster" thing - both the NY and TX state fairs serve alcohol (and TX is the largest in the US). I'm not saying that the NC one has to, although the showcasing of NC wine would be good (i.e. New York State Fair to allow more vendors to sell wine by the glass | syracuse.com). Heck, even Lazy Days in Cary has a beer tent!

I won't be going to the fair either way - went when I first moved down here and haven't felt the need to go back. Plus seeing people pig out on all the gross food would be a real stomach turner for me!

Thanks but no thanks!

Not meant to be heated; I could handle it either way. Just offering some explanations of how we got here.
