Help, we are being relo'd to the Raleigh area and do not know anything about the area. We are a married couple with grown children, interested in an area where we can walk to restaurants, small shops, etc.

We are also interested in being close to the medical facilites at the same time, if possible for personal reasons.

Maybe there is no such area but at least it is worth asking.

We are interested in safety, reasonable close drive to the airport, being close to dog park(s), and a real sense of community.

Housing costs are optional. The area is more important. No agents need contact me as we are already represented.

Thanks for any help.

How about Briar Chapel in Chapel Hill? Low Chatham county taxes, Chapel Hill address, looks like a great new community, empty nesters and families, smaller lots, energy efficient homes. Not walkable to shops right now (they're supposed to build a village center, but that's down the line a bit), but lots of great walking trails, parks, amenities, and 8 miles to downtown Chapel Hill.

They have a great website. I don't know if I am allowed to post websites here, but if you google Briar Chapel NC it will come right up for you.

welcome to the boards. you are very, very general in your postings & in order to give you more guidance, it would be helpful for you to provide to us things like:

- job location
- type of housing you intend to purchase (single family, townhome, condo)
- general range of housing budget

the triangle area is quite spread out. if you wish to be closer to medical facilities, there are the better-known facilities such as UNC hospitals (chapel hill) & duke (durham). there are, of course, facilities in raleigh, including dukeraleigh & wakemed facilities.

please elaborate & we will do our best to give more input. also, searching for specifics that you desire may turn up threads of interest.

If you search the boards you will probably find 85% of what you're looking for - hardly a week goes by without someone posting a virtually identical post.

Btw, I don't mean to sound snarky. I just want you to know that there is a lot of good information already on the boards that might be helpful.

One of my favorite areas in the triangle is north hills. I also like the five points area. The area is quite large and you will find a person in each town/neighborhood who LOVES it....so your decisions may be difficult. Luckily for you, there are many many medical facilities in the area:

Rex
Duke Raleigh
Wake Med (numerous campuses)
University of NC hospitals (chapel hill)
Duke University Medical Center (durham)

Good luck!

Leigh

Raleigh is so spread out that it is difficult to classify it as a "walking neighborhood".

There are condos, downtown.

Brier Creek Country Club has the Brier Creek Shopping Center very close by.

Like Leigh mentioned, the North Hills area has some older homes that are close to North Hills Shopping Center.

Price will help eliminate some areas but you will find what you like...everyone does!

I agree with the advice to search this forum on each specific topic you're wondering about--hundreds of threads about each (though pay attention to the dates they were written, as many things have changed in the past 2 years or so). When you've gotten a little more 'feel' for the area, then you can ask more directed questions based on your general knowledge.

Where specifically will your husband be working? You'd probably want to minimize the commute among other things, so knowing that would help.

Wake Forest sounds like a good match for you - great downtown with lots of shops and restaurants, and a Rex Express right around the corner as well as Rex and Wake Med not far at all. (as well as Duke Regional)

Durham can work too. Duke Hospital is one of the top 10 med centers in the US, and there are lots of neighborhoods that are walkable and safe near it. One example that is probably the most walkable to restaurants and shopping is Trinity Park, but there are many others depending on your budget.

Does work push you closer to one end of the Triangle or the other? It can take over an hour to get from one end of the other, so commute is an important factor. Retired? Durham was ranked the best place in the nation to retire by CNN Money:
