I can see there a lot of animal folks down here which is great to see. Any recommendations for a fully comprehensive vet? I heard good things about Mayfair? Any input would be greatly appreciated.....If you've had a poor experience somewhere, I would appreciate knowing that too.
P.S. Thanks for the recommendations on dog friendly swimming holes - we're going to venture out tomorrow!
It's a bit of a haul for us, but we recently started taking our cat and dog to Dr. Gene Bailey at Peak Animal Hospital in Apex and we couldn't be happier. Company History, Company Information, Dr. Gene Bailey, Animal Hospital Of Peak Plaza, Apex, NC (http://www.apexanimal.com/page3.html - broken link) . Note that he's one of 5 board certified vets in Wake County.
If you are interested I can PM you the practice we left and why (it was a concern about the staff, not the vets).
We just used Cornerstone VCA Animal Hospital on High House Rd. in Cary. My 8yr old dog had a teeth cleaning and a mass removal from her eye. She also was a new patient there. Everyone at cornerstone was excellent!!! Very friendly, and calling to check on my doggie's progress. Dr. Ferguson was very thourough! Very impressed from our first vist! Plan on continuing our pet's care there for her annual check-ups, vaccinations and anything else she needs. I found out about Dr. Ferguson and cornerstone through a different thread similar to yours and couldn't be happier about the good advice. Good Luck!
Crossroads vet in Cary is awesome. Its on that road right behind Crossroads plaza, its actually in a house turned into a vet office. Awesome people.
Crossroads Vet is actually just beyond the Cary border. (1112 Jones Franklin Rd, Raleigh, NC 27606). They are very good.
I believe that there are lots of fine vets in the area. Partly in thanks to the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine which has an excellent reputation. I heard on the news recently that over the coming years that facility will be expanded into a Centennial Campus: Centennial Biomedical Campus (http://centennial.ncsu.edu/cbc/index.html - broken link). Similar to the existing Technology Centennial Campus. Bonus for the area.
Veterinary "Internists" are specialists with far more training than your average corner vet. The American college of Veterinary Internal Medicine has a website which lists its diplomats by area. Its a good idea to have one of these doctors as your regular vet if possible just in case you need their expertise down the road. Since NC State is one of the top 5 Vet schools in the US,You will find many .
I "third" (?) the recommendation of Crossroads. I have a beagle and I spoke to the folks at Triangle Beagle Rescue and asked which vet they use, and they spoke very highly of Crossroads. So far, the staff has been very nice (although there was one moment of confusion between my dog and another patient... nothing serious though!) and Dr. Jennifer was great.
I am used to a huge vet practice in Alexandria, VA. While the care there was excellent, it always seemed a little impersonal. I did not get that vibe at all from Crossroads. While the facility itself seems a bit "no frills" (and I'm fine with that), it's more important to me to have good vets and a nice staff that will make a big fuss over my dog.

I know this is an old post, but in case someone else is wondering the same thing--I use a "mobile vet" that worked at Crossroads and still has a good relationship with them. She is awesome. Crossroads is great too but the mobile vet is actually cheaper, more convenient and less traumatic for the pets. She is by far the most caring vet I've ever worked with. If your pets need x-ray work or anything like that they will need to go into a vet hospital though. Her company is VetCare Mobile. The phone is 363-0773.
I've come across some vets in fancy Cary vet hospitals where they don't seem to love the animals or care about making them feel comfortable, which is very disturbing.
