I had a little chuckle when the title said "Eclectic, walkable neighborhoods" and your first line talked about moving to the Cary/RTP area. Don't think there are any "Eclectic, walkable neighborhoods" anywhere
That was my first thought! Cary is the anti-eclectic! You don't want there! Or anywhere else in Southern Wake Cty, probably.
Check the Oakwood and Mordecai neighborhoods near downtown Raleigh. Definitely "eclectic" and beautiful walking, and I think there are many places for rent. Your nearby shopping choices might be limited, but there are a lot of buses around downtown.

Husband and I talked about this while riding through downtown Cary last night.
Cary COULD be eclectic and walkable. I think they don't wanna be.
problem with the areas in DT Raleigh being suggested is that prices are really high and $225k gets you a small fixer upper...
DT Durham has hoods like Old North Durham, Burch Ave, Duke Park, Old West Durham that are definitely walkable and have a lot going on around them. Old West has 9th & Broad streets. Burch Ave has the Brighteaf area to walk to, Old North Durham and Duke Park (the more affordable of DT Durham hoods) have the booming area of Central Park where all the old building have been bought and are either rehabbed or are getting rehabbed as restaurants, bars, nightlife, etc. There is also a new local supermarket going up near in downtown near OND and Cleveland-Holloway neighborhood which is based on the same idea as Weaver St Market in CH-Carrboro. The DT Durham farmers market is also walkable from Duke Park, C-H & OND.
Just north of Downtown DUrham you also have Northgate Park & Colonial Village neighborhoods that are more affordable and a good alternative to DT Durham hoods. I live in the Colonial Village neighborhood in which is a short bike ride away on the greenway to DT Durham. I live nearby lots of restaurants and local super markets like Red & Whites that offer local produce, coffee, eggs, etc. Best of all, we have Northgate Park & Eno River accessible to us here in CV as an urban oasis which features a dog park a short walk away. The Eno River is a short ride north with great walking trials around the river and plenty of places for a Sunday picnic
