The problem is I do not think tipping is getting you any better service unless you are a regular there and they know you are going to tip really well. These days everyone is looking for a tip even for crappy service they just assume they should get 20%. Honestly I hate how tipping works in America. I fell you should only have to tip if you get extraordinary care and you should not feel pressured to give a tip for everything. Instead we live in a world were the service industry is underpaid by their employer and we get guilt tripped into having to make up the difference. I do reluctantly tip 20% but I never tip the pizza delivery guy either. Although that's just because I always pick it up myself

Well, since YOU are the pizza delivery guy, try ringing your front doorbell and giving the pizza to your wife...maybe she'll tip you!!!
I tip my bartender well. She knows me by name, knows what I like to drink, and is always friendly and pleasant. I go to this bar maybe 2 or 3 times a month, and am always treated like I own the joint! I have no problem tipping them generously. But would I tip at a sandwich shop? Nope.
Tipping should be an add-on for fantastic service, not something that encourages lingering or expectation. So, if they take a king up a stairway and do not knock over your bric-a-brac or child on the way, tip um if ya want. If they toss a double on the ground floor, it is part of the job.
As it relates to the original topic, I agree with this comment.
For services that are typically payed by gratuity, then I disagree. Mattress Delivery guys get paid, and a real hustler will be recognized and will get additional tips from some folks who appreciate it. Good. But Restaurant people are basically not paid. They get a nominal amount, so that their taxes can be collected, but their check is usually "almost nothing". It's not optional to tip these kinds of people, it's part of the price of the product you are buying.
It's a great question by the OP, because it gets very confusing to me on some items. FWIW, we recently had a mattress set delivered. They blew us off the first day, so we cancelled the order all together. They called us back, talked us into taking it anyway, and we decided it was a good deal, so we did. They were hours late, and spent another 30 minutes on the phone with me because they embarked on a rural delivery with no GPS (dumb!). They were not particularly nice (nor rude), but were only required to bring it in the door and set it down on the floor. I did not feel this warranted a tip, but (before all the other problems) my wife and i discussed it, and were prepared to give $10-ish, if the guys were friendly, semi-punctual, and professional.
I would offer food and drink at the least and tip for great service.
I just read through the other thread linked here and I guess my nephew needs a new job because he sure isn't getting $14/hour. He is a 'pizza guy' and only makes $4 something an hour, doesn't get paid for mileage and doesn't get the delivery fee either. He depends on tips or it wouldn't even be worth the gas to go to his job. He's polite and a hardworker and I hate to hear that some think he doesn't deserve a tip.
