In this context progressive is not necessarily a political term. It can describe beliefs that are not necessarily orthodox. For example, the orthodox view is that the God of Islam and the God of Christianity are not the same. The progressive thought is that they are the same. One example. A progressive church might well sanction same-sex marriage. An orthodox/conservative one would not. But we are not talking Republican/Democrat.
I am just curious --- did you ever find a church in Raleigh area that had the sort of "emergent" teachings that you were seeking combined with contemporary worship style?
Hi, we live in the North Raleigh area and are looking for a church with in-depth sermons, good live modern band music (no choirs or hymns), and a good children's program. We have been to the "movie theatre" churches and they are aimed at new Christians and not in-depth enough. We have been lifelong church goers so we are really past that. We prefer theology and teaching similar to Rob Bell and Brian McClaren. We would also prefer a non Mega church environment.
You can also listen to some of the sermons online. I would love to go there but we are too far to get really involved. It fits the bill of Rob Bell, Rachel Evans, Brian McLaren, etc. They use their minds, reason, and faith together. A lot of discussion and relationship, from what I have read and heard.

"Other churches we have visited/attended are New Hope in Durham, Lifepointe in Raleigh, North Raleigh Community Church. None of those met our needs."
Anyone know of any emergent churches in the North Raleigh area?
Since I don't know what an emergent church is, I had to look it up. Here's an article critical of the movement: https://carm.org/what-emerging-church
North Raleigh Community Church describes themselves as an "emerging spirtual community", but i'm not sure they are what you want: http://www.northraleighcommunitychurch.org/

North Raleigh Community Church would likely fit the bill -- but they relocated recently. Can't remember if they are closer to downtown now.
