My opinion, I wouldn't dismiss Durham totally. I would check into complexes in Durham. As far as Brier Creek, the rents will be higher there but the complexes do run specials. Me personally, I would rent a house, may be a little more money, sometimes not, but at least you won't have the apartment noise, parking issues, etc that come with apartment living. I guess it's personal preference though. I lived in Villas at Brier Creek now named Colonial Grand at Brier creek for a short time before I found a home. Like one poster said, when the complex initially opened the rents were reasonable, but the rents skyrocketed as the place filled up, industry standard I assume. Overall this complex was nice, it was on the more quiet side of Brier Creek, not anywhere near the Walmart/Glenwood intersection. I had a 3rd floor apartment and noise was very minimal. I would never rent an apartment with someone above me due to stomping and noise. I would check out Brier Creek, pretty much they're all clustered together off Brier Creek Pkwy. Again, don't dismiss Durham, there are many nice sections of Durham and for the rent in Brier Creek, you may find a small house for the price. Good Luck and Welcome to NC.
I moved to Bexley Apartments this summer and don't have any complaints. The apartments are not top-of-the-line (granite counters like we saw at the Preserve) but they are very nice. I believe the rent fluctuates, much like many of the complexes around here, with the season, but we pay $819 (with a pet fee) for a 1BR. Washer/dryer inside as well as a 6x8 storage space inside - which was important for us moving from a 2BR in NY. Good luck to you!
My wife and I live in The Exchange at Brier Creek and are happy here. We have not had any odd bug issues or noise issues. I see people reporting such on apartmentratings.com. I do think the insulation between floors is weak and strongly suggest renting a top floor. I feel sorry for our neighbors below given my heavy feet. We pay about $960 after utilities and trash. We heard that rent will be increasing and that is part of why we are looking at houses. We will probably have to leave the area unfortunately, unless we buy a townhome.
