Machine Head,
What type of vehicles do you have?
I'm so concerned about the costs of registering my vehicles that I'm considering registering them separately even though it'll mean two separate trips to DMV.
Thanks.
Ell
One of my cars is a lease and one is owned, both are 2004 makes. (Infinity & Hyundai) They base the fee's/taxes on sticker price, except on leases. You can vist the DMV website for how it's calculated.
Side note, a friend just registered his Scion and they didn't have that vehicle make in thier system. He told them it was made by Toyota and they still didn't have it. They asked him what the next closest model was and he said "Prius" (should have said Corolla, but he had no clue) As a result he got a state discount on the registration because his Scion was coded as a Hybrid Vehicle. Don't know how long this loophole will be there but take advantage while you can...
Here's a tip that may help all of you with "test anxiety". When you're taking the test to get your license, you have to answer 20 questions correctly. You have 25 questions total (so you can only get 5 wrong). You're allowed to skip questions you don't know the answers to and go back to them later. If you get to a question you don't know the answer to, skip it. If you answer 20 correctly, you may never have to answer the unknown question (and therefore risk an incorrect response). The test stops after you answer 20 questions correctly. I got the first question wrong when I took the test, which freaked me out! Then I realized I could skip those "not sure of" questions and ended up passing the test without missing any more answers! Good luck!
I went to the DMV in Durham on South Roxboro. It was BUSY. I asked how long the wait would be and the man said about an hour. But he noticed I had two young kids with me and he let me go next, but whispered "if anyone asks you, tell them you have an appointment." I did feel bad for skipping the line, but hey, I had little ones with me. The point is: You can make an appointment. I'm not sure how, but you can. And by the way, everyone was nice at the Durham DMV.
Can somebody help me understand why you need to pay for a NC Title? I came here from MI, have never moved out of state and just don't quite understand this.

Titling of motor vehicles is a state function. Each state handles their own.
...Those same cars here cost me $250 total with vanity plates. Also my insurance dropped by about $400 a year.
Is the vanity plate a one time charge? In Massachusetts I screwed myself by getting one. I had to re register my car every year, instead of every two, plus I think it cost me more every time.
Question on the title, what if the car is still being paid off and the title is in the hands of the lending institution? Thanks!
Your state DMV didn't give you a duplicate title with all the lienholder information printed on it?
