You won't believe this, but I drove to work today on 540 and did not drive by a State Police speedtrap. Apex to exit 67.

Why do they need patrol cars with radar when they can just calculate your speed by measuring elapsed time between tollbooths?

How is it a speed trap if the speed limit is posted and constant?

I always struggle to understand this. We set speed limits and pay police officers to risk their lives to enforce them. If we don't want speed limits and/or enforcement, shouldn't we use the democratic process to eliminate them?

Well if the speed limits were based completely on sound engineering practices it would be me thing but they usually are politically set.

As far as toll data, I'm not sure it is allowed to be used for that. That would only be average speed anyway you could always being going much faster or slower at any point between them.

The new 540 is built with such wide exit spacing and to such extreme engineering standards and so little traffic right now that I think it could handle a 70mph speed limit, easy. I guess NC just has a policy against setting 70mph limits in urban areas. Plus, traffic will get heavier in the future.

Most people already drive 70-75 mph on 540. I would not want to be there if the legal limit was 70and people were regularly doing 80mph. I see way too much bad driving going on there already!

Don't know if it could be used legally; NCTA is not in the law enforcement business per se. The General Assembly might have to straighten that out.

But as for average speed: if your average speed is 66 mph or better between two toll stations, there would be definite proof that you exceeded the speed limit at least somewhere in between. It's the "Mean Value Theorem" in calculus.

Right or wrong, "speeding" is defined as exceeding the LEGAL speed limit at the time.

My point is with the amount of cars using the road, very few, they waste a cop in a place where safety is not an issue. Put him on 40 where it is a blood bath every morning. But we all know this is about revenue and not safety. It's a lot easier to stand out on 540 and write a ticket than on 40 where cars are whizzing by.

People will complain about anything. I guess. Hey, it's been 3 hours and no post asking how to get out of a speeding ticket. Looks like a slow day on the forum!
