I'm moving to start a new job in Cary. I've traveled the world and lived in large, U.S. cities: D.C. area, Atlanta, and Dallas. I don't want a commute longer than 30 minutes to work, but I am used to ethnic restaurants, plays, outdoor activities such as hiking, biking and canoeing. I want to live around progressive professionals (not necessarily 20-somethings). Where would yolu recommend I start looking for a place to rent for under $1,000? A place with heavy concentration of families is probably not ideal, but i am open to suggestions.
Well, I'm 45+, single, female and live in a single family house in Cary, so I'm probably not going to be much help with your housing question. If I was renting I'd go with Brampton Moors Apartments, but that's just because I love this very suburban neighborhood. :-)
Cary is a great location to be in with regard to outdoor activities. Lots of nearby parks & greenways, and places to canoe/kayak. You can get a good idea of what outdoor activities are popular here by checking out Meetup.com. This blog has a lot of good info also: http://getgoingnc.com/.
The Triangle overall is pretty small, especially compared to what you're used to - you could live near work and easily be able to drive to the other activities you mentioned. I don't know what rents are like in downtown Raleigh, but that's one option if you want a more city feel (but it won't be anything like the bigger cities you mentioned). Downtown Durham might also be an option, depending on where in Cary you'll be working.

If you consider Durham as your urban option I suggest West Village, Station Nine, & Lakeview Apartments . Depending on your budgeting.
Triangle Area The Exchange at Brier Creek Apartments ( near the airport-Cary) ,Camden Asbury Village Apartments (In Raliegh) , Camden Ashbery Village,( In Raliegh), Heather Park ( I believe that is considered Cary), The Apartments at The Arboretum ( Cary/Morrisville).
Yes, as adln07 mentioned, it matters quite a bit where exactly in Cary you'll be working. But generally speaking, if it's in the central/southern/eastern parts of Cary, I'd probably recommend the central, inner portions of Raleigh, while if it's in the northern or western parts of Cary, the central, inner parts of Durham may be a better bet. Both cities have strengths and weaknesses, but are also very similar in lots of ways. Both pale in comparison to DC, Atlanta, or Dallas in terms of urbanness, of course, but both are quite nice in many ways, and could offer much or most of what you're looking for. Sadly, neither is close enough to most parts of Cary to probably offer you a super-short commute, but neither should be unmanageable, and you should be able to find a sub-30 minute average commute from at least one or the other.
