Except when you register your vehicle you specify the mileage. It's recorded and displayed right on the title. They should just utilize that information and automatically adjust for high mileage and save everyone the effort of having to file for an adjustment. Though I'm assuming most people don't and generates more revenue than the expense of having staff processes whatever adjustments are sent in. But that's not my point.
What would the best county be for the tax burden, and how does it compare to the cost of housing. In other words where is the most economical county/area to buy and live?

As far as county property tax rates go, Carteret has the lowest at the moment, 0.2300 per $100. Scotland County has the highest rate at 1.0600 per $100.
The car is a high mileage car with 126K on the odometer. Based purely on the phone conversation this theoretically reduces the NADA vehicle value by nearly $3K which in turn reduces my $201.97 tax bill by $43.41 or a whopping 20%. The agent indicated I need to send in some sort of shop print out (dealer service, oil change, etc.) indicating the mileage in January and mail it to the revenue department along with a letter requesting a high millage adjustment which I will do.
Just a follow up. I received my adjusted taxes and they reduced the valuation on my vehicle from $15,900 to $11,130. The bill is now $148.88. Total reduction of $53.09 or 26.4%. BAM!
Thank You for that link. I will be comparing Wake, Orange and Durham; the Triangle Area. I have 2 daughters - one in Carrboro and one in Zebulon- so i will consider , all factors to my relocation. We will be relocating after selling property in RI and utilizing a fixed income. My next questions concern Utilities. Gas , electric or oil? Cable vs dish?
Thanks again
I think I just mailed a check to Wake County for about $70 on a 1994 sedan I drive. I haven't seen a bill yet for the personal taxes on my husband's car.
We registered in Cary, but moved last month (2 months after registering) to Durham. Will the taxes differ? It seems a bit silly that we have to pay the taxes to Wake County and we only lived there for 2 months out of 12. I guess what I mean by my question is, obviously the taxes are different in the different counties, but how will this work, this year I pay Wake County, and next year I pay Durham County?
We just got our tax bills for the cars. I found it interesting that my husbands tax bill was 1 dollar less than mine, though he has a Camry that is 1 year old, and I have an Accord that is now 3 years old. The mileage accrued on our cars is similar if you break it down by year. They showed our cars worth the same amount-which cannot in a million years be correct-he has a few add ons to his car that significantly increase the value.
In California we never were taxed yearly for our vehicles, so I havenet a clue on how this all works.
I am confused as well...I have a 2006 sedan (Sonata), my tax last year was $200.55. I also paid sales tax on the vehicle in NY when purchased. The bill I just paid that was due 5-1-08, was $98.42...oh well, something tells me I was overcharged last year...being new to NC...who knew...
