Just found out about the Motor Vehicle Property Tax. Oh joy. Never heard of such a thing up here in PA. Can someone tell me how much it is? Is it based on value of car? What if car is paid off? Is it a percentage of blue book value? Any info would help my wife and I better plan our nearing relocation.

Thanks

In Wake Co. it's about 1% of the retail value. We paid $250 on a brand new Odyssey and $200 on a 4 year old Honda Pilot. It's deductible from your federal income tax if you itemize. There's also a one time registration fee that's close to $200/car.

For Wake Co:
WakeGOV.com - Tax Rates & Fees
It doesn't matter whether or not it's paid off.

Yup, about 1% of the value. Mine was just $33 for a 1996 Sentra. I drive a clunker!

Default Wake County Vehicle Tax Bills

Does anyone know how Wake County determines a vehicles value? I saw that the tax bills for our vehicles are available on their site and I uhm nearly had a coronary.

The value they put on 1 vehicle is more than double the value the state of MA taxed us on the last 2 yrs. Vehicle 2 is higher as well

Our total bill for both vehicles is $279.80. Our total bill last year in MA was $116.25.

They use a computer valuation program based on the VIN#. Price is supposed to reflect dealer retail.

You can appeal if vehicle has high mileage or heavy damage.

I was hit for $117 (Wake County) for a 2001 Ford Explorer with 140,000 miles on it -- no way that truck is worth $11,000!

Is the rule the same for a motorhome? If you have a motorhome worth, say, $60,000 your annual tax will be about $600? Wow. That, plus $120/month to store the motorhome in Apex is a deal-breaker -- won't be buying that anytime soon!

You can appeal based on the 140K mileage.
