Hi,
My husband and I are thinking to rent a home in CH with the idea to buy the next year. I've read all of the posts about Winmore, Claremont and also Sunset Creek but I was wondering if anyone who lives there can give me their thoughts. Do you like it? We are looking a community feel? We have three kids: 6,4, and 2 yo. We are hispanic also Sometimes is difficult to find the right place where we can feel like home. We are not doctors, we are business owners. Our kids are Floridians!
We been living for almost three years in a part of a community, but it does not show any diversity or multicultural activities, we have really good friends by the way.
I'm just trying to get an overall feel for the community. Any insight you can offer would be greatly appreciated!

Chapel Hill is diverse and accepting. Good schools but homes/rentals are on the high side.

I dont know if CH is multicultural as I have never been there, but I wish you the best luck!

In my section of Raleigh we dont have multiculturalism, its the same people mostly living in this area for 50 or more years. I guess you could call us hicks lol

Are you for real? You're a Raleigh native and you've NEVER been to Chapel Hill?

chote, I don't know about those neighborhoods, in particular. I mean, I know they're very nice neighborhoods, but I don't have any friends there so not sure who all lives there.

Chapel Hill and Carrboro, like much of North Carolina, saw a big increase in the Hispanic population beginning in the '90s. Most of the Hispanic folks I know are Mexican and immigrants or young kids of immigrants. My daughter's elementary school has a Spanish dual language school and is about 1/4th Hispanic, most seeming to be kids of immigrant parents. There's a sizable number of Hispanic folks who don't speak much English, but of course many who do. There are a lot of good Mexican restaurants and tiendas that are Hispanic owned. I do know a couple of other Hispanics — I have a friend from Puerto Rico, and there are others who are Central American immigrants. There definitely are first, second and third, etc, generation Hispanics, too. The immigrant and first generation is very visible, though, and I would guess that most of them would never be able to afford a house in the neighborhoods you mentioned. We do have at least one family in our older mid-priced neighborhood (I don't know all of our neighbors) that is Hispanic (not the generation that immigrated, I don't think).

Does that help?

Chapel Hill/Carrboro is very multi-cultural and folks from all nationalities are associated with UNC. I'm sure there are quite a few Hispanic families whose situations more closely mirror your description of your own, but I see a lot of the other folks I described above.

ETA: I think that this holds true for most of North Carolina—that most of the Hispanic population comprises recent immigrants and their kids.
