Buy frames online. Take to Costco for lenses.

I've got to say, if everyone did this, we would have no local shops (of any sort). I don't like this advice at all, nothing personal but I hope you'll see my point.

I also wear glasses interchanged with contacts. I always buy them from my optometrist. I'm well aware that it may not be the bargain basement cheapest option but I'm willing to pay for service and convenience.

The OP asked to stay within a given price range. For designer frames.

No need to attempt to shame me. I don't bargain hunt, nor do I like shopping around. If you had ANY clue how much I spend locally, you'd see why this post amuses me.

If you care at all about budgeting your eye wear this is hands down the best approach. Otherwise, go to Lenscrafters, pay a huge premium for designer frames and a lot of $$ for substandard lenses.

IMO, personally experienced!

I ended up doing a combination of things. I used Coastal.com to upload a photo and use their try it on application (which worked great on Chrome). That allowed me to play with different styles and colors that I might not have considered before.

Then I made another visit to Raleigh Costco, with a slightly more open mind. They also get new inventory in ALL the time.

Quite happy with the purchase, and they kindly provided me with the PD measurements that I would need if I want to order a pair online next time. But with progressives, that's a bit hit and miss since the fitting is so specific.

Thanks, all.

PS - and another recommendation for Dr. Mauro, the optometrist affiliated with the Durham Costco. The contacts she prescribed this year are even better than the ones last year, which was the FIRST time anybody has been able to fit me with mono-vision lenses. The woman is a wizard.

That's good to hear. I found with progressives that I need to have a lens with more height (at least 29 mm) so I can look down to read, sew or use the computer. I can't easily use the skinny lenses which are so popular today.

I also like the try-on views at Coastal.com to experiment with more daring designs than i might pick by myself.

Does Costco put lenses in a frame for you? If so, you could just buy the frames from FramesDirect.com at take them to CostCo.

They do. The cost for lenses (progressive) is roughly $130. That would have been my next step if I hadn't finally found a pair at Costco that I liked!

They will, but there is an additional $20 charge. I did this last year to get new lenses put in frames I originally bought at an eye doctor's optical shop.

Do exactly as Meh's says.

Good places to look online are www.framesdirect.com www.coastal.com and www.eyeglasses.com in my opinion. I just bought some frames online last week for a fraction of the price at a store.
