I have also had a hard time finding a job. I've been here since August and was doing a part time temp job with Office Team that I thought was going to be a month but turned out to be much longer and they wouldn't place me elsewhere when I needed a full time job. I love the area but am struggling to get settled here because I don't have contacts here. I do believe its a lot of times not what you know but who you know.

You might give medical transcription a good look, it's a very well paying field and it's my understanding that voice recognition software isn't sophisticated enough to encompass all of the terminology? Search online for transcription firms, give them a call.

Also, you have to nearly embarrass yourself to find a job in this day and age. Don't just send in your resume to law firms, go to their websites and locate a senior partner or their HR manager, then send them a cover letter detailing how you can bring value to their firm - then don't stop there, call and leave a voicemail for that person clearly stating your interest in that firm professionally and politely - and do it every other week for 6 to 8 weeks.

Persistence pays off, staffing agencies are only as good as the recruiter who gets you into their database. Try stopping by, take them some muffins you made to their office, develop a relationship with them by dropping by just to say hello and that you're hoping they are keeping you in mind.

If you have exceptional typing speed advertise that, if you have exceptional travel planning or meeting scheduling skills, or software package skills, advertise that.

Market, market, bang on doors politely and market some more.

Well I moved to Charlotte almost 2 yrs ago I have been in almost the same situation. I have excellent qualifications, sr mgt and training specialist. I get very few interviews and I have paid several agencies who give you no referrals. The job Market in Charlotte is locked down with the good ole boy system unless you are in banking. Your profession could be different, but dont come here without a job either. I am considiering leaving soon to Texas or back to Cali. I am very discouraged at how they are promoting this state and it is not friendly to outsiders and without hiring their relatives and friends its no surprise its taking so long to move NC into the 21st century.

I personally think you made the right decision to move here without a job, if you truly wanted to be here. My wife and I found that it was nearly impossible to get employers to take you seriously when you lived out of state. She got lucky at the last second and got a job offer here right before we moved from TX. Then I just took a job that was 100% travel based out of DC. I've been home since October, and out of work since late November. I am still struggling, living here, to get me foot in the door. Moving here is part 1, knowing people is part 2 to getting your foot in the door. It's very hard to get your foot in the door places without those two. I've had really horrible luck with positions that were a sure thing falling through too, for whatever reason. Hopefully we both find something soon.

I've lived here 20 years and enjoy Raleigh.

Simply fail to see why so many folks run here thinking it's heaven. Many are really running FROM overpriced housing and not running here because of a true desire for NC.

Bad way to pick in my opinion.

This is not directed at anyone in particular but has anyone here thought that possibly the "issue" is not the job market but "YOU"? I do not mean that to be mean but there are a lot of people out there who think they are the best at what they do but a) have a terrible resume b) terrible interviewing skills c) look for the wrong positions whether under or overqualified or d) just don't really know how to get a job. I understand that there are extenuating circumstances sometimes but if you try and try and try and try and cannot find a job I would say it's less the Triangle and more you. I hate to be blunt but it's probably the case.

There are a lot fewer entry level service jobs here because of immigration. Those jobs tend to stink anyway.

There is nothing wrong with you or your qualifications. You just need to be aware of one thing only. Unless your area of expertise is very technical (like software engineering, science, etc) the work culture here in the South is that to get a desirable job, you need to know someone at a company, then you will get ANY job, whether or not you are qualified for it! This is a FACT. There are many unqualified, unprofessional, nasty people roaming the hallways of major offices in this area and they got in only because they were lucky enough to have a friend or relative in upper management. This is the major reason that even if you get a job in this area on your own (which is a possibility), you will not like it because you'll find that the work environment is very unprofessional due to the many incompetent people who get jobs through various connections.
Obviously, you've learned by now that you should not beleive everything you read about such and such city being the best city for this and that or about such and such company being on the Forbes list of Best employer, etc, etc. It is all bull****! There is a good reason they promote certain states or employers as being the "best place to live or work for", but in time, their true colors come out and people just pack up and leave! Sad but true..

Hi All Nanvas found a job and lost a job. I am moving to Charlotte in April. I had it with this place and temp work is scarce. I was just approved for an apt., today and I move in April. The job I had for one mth doing secy/reception they let me go and had their previous receptionist return. I know I was doing a good job. They are wishy washy and can't adjust to new people. In addition to that they feel I am making too much for the position. Oh well, go figure. Any suggestions on agencies or employers.

I don't know if you are moving to Charlotte because you found a job. If you already found one, great, if not, you will find that Charlotte is a lot like Raleigh when it comes to the job situation.. Meaning, if you know someone in upper management, you will get in with no problem otherwise, be prepared to wait tables and do a lot of networking before you land a permanent job in Raleigh or Charlotte. When I first moved here, I could not find a job so I resorted to waiting tables making about $650.00 a week with no benefits. Then, one day, there were a group of HR Managers sitting in my section at the Durham restaurant where I used to work. I told them about my situation and they offered to interview me and weeks later, I was offered a permanent job at their company. That was in 2004 and I am still working there. Anyway you do it, just network and tell everyone you come in contact with that you're looking for a job. Also, if you have time during the day, volunteer at non-profit companies, hospitals, etc. That's one way to network and show what your abilities are all at the same time.
