I just got a quote for a basic entrance door with sidelights and transom, from Lowes. $1350

The fitting is $590 - does that sound expensive? The fitter said it would take him half a day.

I said to him, My doctor doesn't charge $1200 a day - he said that Neither did he when he was a doctor...

Are they creating/cutting the space or is it plug and play?

Bada-bish. I think I saw that guy do standup at Charlie Goodnights downtown a decade or so ago. I recognized him because he looked a lot like the doc that did my vasectomy. I felt ripped off both times I saw him.

The soil subsidence here can make it difficult to properly fit a door.

Question for the OP:

How much do you think it should cost?

It probably has to do with the size of the door since with the sidelights and transom it's quite a bit larger than a basic door.

There will be two guys involved in the installation.
One guy cannot handle a door unit with sidelights and transom.

He will have to pick up the door at the store dispose of the old door, provide incidentals like shims, trim, caulk, nails, threshold pan.
He will also provide his own workers' comp and liability insurance and pay his full SS tab directly.

Half a day for an install is probably about 6 hours, plus time at the store and disposal.

I don't know what it should cost, but I know it is easy to overlook a lot of details in the expenses the installer will realize.

That probably changes when no one involved in the installation speaks English
