Catherine - we just moved from NJ and did similar research, we have a 13 year old and were looking for ratings on greatschools and a home in a neighborhood with pool and park etc. What we came to understand in wake county is that even though you have a assigned school, if that is capped, you will be sent to a different school. Based on our research we found all schools in Cary to be good but the ones with greater ratings and reviews were Green Hope elementary and high school and Davis middle school. We looked for homes in that area and saw homes in both Carpenter Village and Preston Village. We finally bought a home in Preston Village. Fortunately for us Green Hope High School is not capped and my son is entering 9th grade. The only private school we tried for is Cary Academy but we were late in the admissions process for this year (Cary Academy is only for middle and high school, they did not seem to have a elementary school) Both these sub divisions have a pool, swim club and playgrounds for younger children. The reason we bought in Preston Village is the lot sizes were larger and the entire neighborhood was pristinely maintained. As for price range you will be able to find what you are looking at in both places though from what we saw Preston Village was more expensive. Hope this helps
