We had a measles outbreak my senior year of college. Almost had to play the NCAA tournament in empty arenas LOL. It was the same situation, a kid who went overseas over Christmas break and brought it back. In that case, I think his immunity had just worn all. We all had to get re-vaccinated to attend class. Of course this was the 1980s so thousands of parents and no one said boo about it.
People's immunity wearing off is what scares me about this kind of stuff. I was born in 1970. I know my parents had me get all the required shots because they aren't crazy idiots (well, most of them aren't and not because of that). But, were the vaccines then as good as now? I don't know. I don't really know what the exact protocol was, one shot or two? Can it wear off in some people with time? Are there young kids in the community that have had one shot and not two? Or not had anything yet? This is so irresponsible. Completely a case where all of us that do the right thing make it possible for whack jobs and idiots to have their crazy ideas and yet still be protected. If enough of them keep doing it, that may not be the case anymore one day.

Oh and people concerned with privacy should think twice before they post stuff in public forums.

According to the WRAL news story

Cary YMCA, 101 YMCA Drive in Cary,
12:15 to 4 p.m. July 25 and
7:15 to 10:15 p.m. July 26

Last time I checked a calendar, the 25th was a Monday and the 26th was a Tuesday.

That sounds like an employee to me, as I don't know any teen who would exercise for 4 hours straight, 2 days in a row.

I received an e-mail from the Cary YMCA alerting me that a person with Measles has been there. The e-mail included the date and times of the person's visits as well as the location they were in at the facility.

Just read the above post and the e-mail from the Y did not indicate the times for Tuesday, just Monday. Still does not sound like a camp counselor based on their location in the facility.

Child care at the Y is over at 1pm and is not occurring at 7:15pm to 10:15.

Yes, the measles has been proven to wear off. I believe when we had the outbreak in college that's why the kid got it. I think he had been vexed as a kid. That's why kids need boosters sometime around 10-11 I want to say. And women who want to get pregnant should make sure they have the vax. My sister dated a guy whose mom had measles while pregnant, and the baby was born blind.

Really? I do - I've seen kids there for hours on end playing hoops. WE've gone there and gone from hoops to racquetball to the weight room. It hardly constitutes a marathon workout session. That seems the most likely scenario given that the kids was at that sports training place on another day. What I have never seen is childcare going till 10 pm at night.

Oops on the dates - my bad.

I don't think it's considered endemic, but it appears that Italy had the greatest number of cases from June 1, 2015-May 31, 2016.

"Italy reported 515 cases, accounting for 28% of the EU/EEA cases in the 12-month period. Most of the Italian cases (365) were reported from January to May 2016. Other countries with a high number of cases were Germany (362), Romania (243) and the United Kingdom (212). More than half of the cases in the EU/EEA (58%) were reported during the first five months of 2016."

Unless you are a student at

Briarcliff Elementary
Cardinal Charter
Cary Elementary
Davis Drive Elementary
Davis Drive Middle
East Cary Middle
Farmington Woods Elementary
Lufkin Road Middle
Reedy Creek Middle
Salem Middle
Weatherstone Elementary
West Cary Middle

and participate in the Cary YMCA's after-school child care program, which runs from approx 2:30pm until 6pm on weekdays.

However, based on the YMCA email received by Sal_M, it seems that the person was probably not a counselor based on their location in the facility. Good to hear that.

When I said child care I was referring to their day care program offered to gym members. Another poster was concerned that their child was exposed while attending the day care program. You are correct that after school care does go on past 1pm.

I was notified via email on July 2. I see that others have responded but here is the email that I received.

Dear YMCA Friends,
As a valued member of the YMCA family, we wanted to let you know that the Wake County Human Services Division of Public Health notified us that a person with a confirmed case of measles visited the Cary Family YMCA last week. The individual was at the Y on Monday, July 25 between 12:30 - 4 p.m. and on Tuesday, July 26 between 7:15 - 10:15 p.m. The patron spent most of his time in the main weight area and in the men’s locker room.
Officials tell us that symptoms of measles begin with a fever, cough, runny nose and red, watery eyes. If you are experiencing symptoms of measles and have not been vaccinated, call your doctor right away.

If you have questions, please call your physician or contact a Wake County Public Health Specialist at 919-729-5233. For more information about measles, visit the CDC website.
Thank you.
