A five mile stretch of Glenwood Avenue from Raleigh to Durham could be converted into a freeway.
The Department of Transportation is considering the change to reduce congestion and create better traffic flow from Interstate 540 in Raleigh to Interstate 85 in Durham.
The move would involve converting Glenwood Avenue, also known as U.S. 70, between T.W. Alexander Drive and Lynn Road into a freeway, cutting off many connections with the exception of a few intersections along the road.
Customers would likely have to start using service roads to get to businesses and, for some property owners, things could get more severe.

'That would provide a better flow for the traffic from 540 over to 85. There is a lot of congestion out there. Anyone who travels that corridor out there knows that," Hancock said.
The planning process for the project has just begun and public meetings will come in the future. Construction on the project would not start until at least 2024.
"Construction on the project would not start until at least 2024." By which time the road will be congested with even more businesses and development, making it at least three years for it to be completed for everyone with service and access roads, if we're lucky, knowing the history on these sorts of projects (sigh).
Is relocating part of United States Route 70 from Leesville Road to Lynn Road onto a new location optional? That can bypass several businesses that would be affected if the existing location is kept for improvement.
Unless they do something horrendously expensive like elevating the expressway above the access roads, there will have to be a major widening with major loss of real estate on both sides. Either way, it sounds like pie-in-the-sky, at least south of Westgate.
And sure, the road can use some help, but with all the identified needs we have all over the area, why is this seemingly going to be jumped ahead of many of them?
Things could get interesting from the intersection with Miami/Mineral Springs to the intersection with Pleasant Rd.
Could this lead to the closure and teardown of businesses along that strip of road?

Miami Blvd is not between Alexander Dr & Lynn Rd....
Brier Creek Parkway is just outside the area for improvement.
I think the second quote in the original post has a lot to do with it. And since the East end connector is under construction, the DOT is looking at more traffic in the area. If all of this had been done in the early 1960's when the East End connector was first planned, it would be a lot easier today.

Um yes, it is...right smack dab in the middle of the section planned for upgrading. In fact, the section of 70 between Mineral Springs and Lynn IS Miami Blvd.

It's a separate project...I want to say 2021 construction estimated?
