ABC News: UNC Student Body President Found Dead

This seems so uncommon, because I always thought Chapel Hill to be a good area.
Am I wrong? Does this worry anyone, or do you think she probably knew her killer ?

i just read the article and it said it was random--but to me that makes it sound worse! like you are walking down the street and you can randomly get shot in CH?
i think there might be some things we dont know yet about this case...

I read on a local blog that this the 2nd shooting death in Chapel Hill in the last few weeks. There was a 3rd shooting in Carrboro in late January, for which a Chapel Hill man has been arrested. Very very odd.

I have been noticing this trend over the last year. It seems the violence has picked up in Chapel Hill. Something is going on there, but I think because it is "Chapel Hill" people don't want to talk about what it might be.

Gangs?

People usually like to talk about gangs in Durham, but rarely will they mention all the gangs in Raleigh and they absolutley do not want to taint Chapel Hill with a gang label. Unfortunately it is spreading into Chapel Hill now and they better address it before they cannot control it.

Lots of people come in from other towns (such as Durham) for the nightlife scene. This includes a lot of gangbanger types. There have been several shootings over the years.

It's so strange. Do they know why she had been in that neighborhood at 5:00 am? Was she out for a morning jog? And her car was found a mile from her body. So sad.

Gangs also come in from Raleigh and there are also some who actually live in Chapel Hill.

Does gang violence in the Triangle tend to be random, or is it mostly aimed at other gangs? From where I've lived, it seems like one city could be the former and one the latter.

I think it's strange that people are suddenly talking about gangs in this thread, seeing as the police do not yet have any suspects in this case. When they do identify suspects, there's a very good chance they will not be gang members.

I think this story is a sobering reminder that crime really can happen anywhere and no town is a perfect little paradise.
