I would go to the beach myself, but if you want to cool off, go to Boone or Blowing Rock. It will be 10-20 degrees cooler there. It rarely gets above 85 and is usually in the 70s. Google tells me it's 69 there right now to Raleigh's 89.

3 hours one-way: Blue Ridge Parkway.
3 round-trip: Uwharrie National Forest.

essentially, i can't do the Beach in 3 hours.
it always seems to take a weekend or longer.

There is a book about the day trips from Raleigh/Durham: https://www.amazon.com/Day-Trips-Ral.../dp/B00740GT90

I have not actually done any of them but it has many very interesting suggestions.

Lynchburg, VA is just over the boarder & a very nice area. D-Day memorial, right near Appomatix, museums, etc. We really enjoyed the area.

Of course around here what is a 3 hour drive for me could be 5 for you depending on where in Durham/Raleigh you are.

The Zoo in Asheboro is a nice day trip. Many days they have extra tours or behind the scenes events that are a nice add on to the day.

Charlotte is just 3 hours (at least for us) and has a ton of museums, NASCAR hall of fame, greenways & events always going on.

Last suggestion would just be to grab an issue of 'Our State' Magazine & see if anything they mention is interesting to you & use that as the start of planning a get away. They cover so many cool & unique places in the state.

I wish this had been posted a few months ago. A day trip on the N&W 611
is incredible! They had several different excursions available. However it's done
now and I'm not sure they are going to do it any more?
