My A/C unit isn't cooling again. The unit is about 14 years old on the old R22 freon.
Instead of spending money yearly to refill the freon, I think the dreaded time has come to just replace with a new unit using the new R-410A freon.

Has anyone had a unit replaced recently and can provide actual costs from recent experiences, which brand unit, and which a/c company?

Thanks!

Lots of variables....SEER15+, 2.5 ton Goodman unit installs are in the 4k - 5k range. I have two Goodmans and the replaced Carrier equip that never worked right. Get 5 quotes. I use Triangle Comfort heating and cooling.

(919) 661-3636. Based on the maintenance that they did for me several of my neighbors have used them for installs. None of us has had to have them come back to fix/adjust anything. I used them to address a bad install from another shop.

Correct, get at least 3 quotes. Different companies use different brands, but I'm not really sure which brands are good. All of the brands seem to have different lines that are less or more expensive.

I used to think Trane was the best but many people describe them as BMWS - engineered too much and expensive to fix. C_Lan looks like didn't have a good experience with Goodman or Carrier. I've had good experience with Lennox units, but not their evaporator coils.

My Goodmans repalced Carrier units. Goodmans have been trouble free for 8 years now. The installer I chose for them was the lowest bid and he did not do a good job in the setup. Had Triangle comfort out spending an hour getting them set up properly and they've been fantastic since.

Parent company of Goodman also makes Trane, they share the same major comments however Trane does have some extra goodies...but goodies tend to break. For something like AC I want super simple and KISS works well. IMO.

I had Justin Woodlief install a Goodman (he's listed on a few of the threads here) - been good, so far. Prices were reasonable, responsiveness was great.

Tranes are a high end product. Good but pricey. I 'd go with Rheem, Ruud or Goodman. Rheem and Ruud are like tanks, not pretty but they are reliable and robust.

I'm studying HVAC right now and was in the industry years ago. STAY AWAY FROM THE FANCY STUFF!!! KEEP IT SIMPLE!!!

He's MIA. Not sure if he bailed on the industry or what but he stopped returning peoples' calls, lot of complaints about that more recently. Not gonna comment on his work because I never had a chance to use him.

Correct - I added Justin Woodlief to my iphone notebook of house maintenance stuff and he has not contacted me in like a year. I try every now and then to see what the big deal with him was, but what's the point with someone who doesn't even call or text back even just to say they are too busy to deal with me? I learned about him from City-Data but everything changes and you gotta keep up!

Justin Woodlief has been deleted. Have great experience with Travis of Air Innovations out of Durham.

Oh, sorry to hear that. Guess I'll need to find someone new to do the yearly check. Thanks for the information.
