Oh wow. I just realized the first season of Trial & Error on NBC was supposed to be a spoof of the case. I did not follow the Petersen case much but when the Owl Theory was mentioned a lightbulb went off over my head...
I worked with Kathleen. I knew Michael and had met the children. I've been in the house and gone down the staircase, prior to the murder of course. I went to her funeral and dropped in on his trial. He did it.

I've been to the house too. They had a weekend estate and yard sale sometime after the trial, and my wife insisted on driving out there on Sunday to look around, not actually buy anything. We got there about mid-afternoon and most everything was already gone including the shoppers. The house inside and out was open to the public except the stairway that sealed off top and bottom. I was a little shocked to see how bad the place was in need of cosmetics inside and out. Paint was peeling off the plaster and the place needed a major scrubbing. The whole experience was just creepy...really creepy, but I'm glad we saw the layout of the place first hand.

You mean, there was not an errant owl that flew through and tore up her head?
I'm sorry, wizard. That must be hard for you, having met the family and working with Kathleen.

the owl attacked her while she was drunk/sleeping on a lounge chair outside. upon being attacked, she tried to come into the house and go up the stairs. At some point along the staircase, the injuries and bleeding overcame her, and she fell backwards down the stairs. THEN Peterson woke up. Right?

Recently watched the documentary, and what really creeped me out was the fact that the bloody staircase remained bloody for years (and years?) while MP, and maybe others, lived in the home.

From what I have read, there is physical evidence (owl feathers, head injuries) to make the first part of that plausible.
Like with Brad Cooper and Jason Young, the prosecutors in each case failed to prove their guilt in the trial and were lucky to get the conviction/plea deals.
