I'm saying I was told how gracious and welcoming Southerners would be and instead you're pelting me with sleet and snow, turned off my power and when I looked for the snow plows, was told "we don't do that here.

A smiley face would be a nice addition to that post...
I moved here 5 days ago from New York. This is not the welcome I was expecting.
Welcome JoBo623! Fellow NY’er here. Came down 6 years ago and first winter was painless. However, the last few, not so much. Don’t get nearly as much snow as NY and summers last longer. The problem here is that things come to a standstill because of ice. There aren’t allocations in budgets for salt/sand/plows so that in instances such as today, we have to wait for sun and for temps to rise. The ice also becomes a problem when there is enough of it to weigh down limbs on trees and power lines. I don’t have school age kids and haven’t had the news on but I am assuming schools are closed (liability issues).
I read earlier this fall that this winter is projected to be wetter and colder than typical in the south. Who knows if that is true? Just expect weather like this to be an event each time it occurs. Sometimes it’s hyped and then turns out to be nothing. Whatever you do, don’t talk about how this would be nothing if it happened in NY because although that is true, it’s simply a very different ballgame down here for the reasons stated above and panic does creep in.
Good luck! I am hopeful you will love it here as much as so many of us “Yankees” do!
I don't get the plow hate. The plowing here is 100x better than it was in NY. I'm pretty sure the guys in NY used to get drunk before they took out the plows, today is the longest I have ever waited for a plow here, I think they came around 4 p.m. and they always do an amazing job. But I know Town of Cary plans and practices for winter weather. Can't speak for other municipalities.
Time to wrap up this storm and get ready for work tomorrow
