Does anyone know if there is a day-use public beach area or place we can put paddleboards/kayaks in on the south side of Lake Gaston? We have never been but thought we would try it for paddleboarding. All of the websites re Lake Gaston do not seem to have basic information on day use public areas, etc...
We recently moved to NC and haven't been very impressed with the red-clay based lakes and murky water and are hoping Lake Gaston will be a little more clear like the NE lakes/ponds.

Thanks!
You won’t like Lake Gaston either. Drive to the beach.
Not sure why somebody advise you to go to the beach. If you prefer salt water or ocean water, go to the beach, if you prefer fresh water or lake water go to a lake. Harris lake can be really warm in the summer and some do not like it. This is the reservoir for the nuclear plant. Jordan Lake can be very crowded, avoid the boat ramp access.
Lake Gaston can be really busy during the week end around mid day, so lot of waves and no calm water.
The lakes in NC are gross unless you get up into the mountains (Lake James, Lake Toxoway, etc). Plus you get the great worry of brain eating amoeba and the flesh eating bacteria vibrio vulnificus. Hard pass for central NC lakes, plus the water is usually very warm.
Vibrio is not the same as the flesh-eating bacteria although both are very serious. Vibrio is only found in brackish water (mix of saltwater and freshwater) at the coast. There were several cases of folks who contracted it after flood waters from Hurricane Florence pushed brackish water inland. Vibrio is not a thing you need to be concerned about with area lakes.
I gotta agree - the lakes are gross. The murky water bothers me mostly because I know there are snakes chilling in there somewhere. I'd rather swim with sharks than snakes.

Because all lakes in NC are not clear unless you go to the mountains. Even those are not the best. People that come from up north are used to clearer lakes because they freeze over and kill a lot of the stuff the discolors it. The ocean is a lot more pleasant to be in than freshwater in NC.
