I hope we dont get a direct hit. Last year with whatever that 2nd trop storm was that hit us, actually took down a 100ft sweetgum and dropped it on the area we process our chickens at.
Plus our portable wooden shelters use tarps as roofing over part of the shelter as rain protection. Tarps dont do well in hurricanes.
Worst storm I was in (in terms of damage, not wind speed) was Frances. Dropped a tree on the extended family members house I was at in central FL and flooded a ton of the area.
The eye actually went directly over our house. We stood outside in the eye of the hurricane. It was insane. We went for a walk while the eye was over us haha.
7 year old Nick was terrified huddling under the fort made under the coffee table when Fran was taking out every tree in the neighborhood and rain was forcing its way through the windows to wet the curtains.
10 year old Nick was like "come at me bro" with Floyd (Floyd wasn't as bad in the immediate Triangle area as Fran lol) and happy to out of school early.
29 Year old Nick with Frances thought "well that was a disappointment; that long trip to Costco was for naught!"
I always think of Ron White's story about braving a hurricane
"It's not THAT the wind is blowing, it's WHAT the wind is blowing. If you get hit by a Volvo, ...."

We did the exact same thing. The eye was just a nice temporary stress relief from hour of watching the trees sway and snap. The eerie calm of the eye of a hurricane during the night cannot adequately be described.
If we get into the Hs, watch out. Hugo was pretty intense and Hazel is the hurricane all other hurricanes are measured against in North Carolina. https://www.ourstate.com/hazel/ . It blasted through Brunswick County up to Fayetteville and Raleigh and all the way up to Toronto!
