currently we live in eastern long island. we live just outside of a main city. we have ALOT of farms and vineyards. we are looking at Holly Springs, Wake Forest Areas. my husband is a home builder, but NY housing is horrible right now. the school district where are is not the best either. I had lived in Havelock NC (actually MCAS Cherry Point) for about 4 years. my daughter was born there and I loved it. unfortunately I had no other choice but to return to NY. we have a few questions:

1. we have heard that northerners are not usually welcomed in NC. (as stated before I did live in military housing in Havelock, and it was hard to make friends there - military towns are a different way of life). where we are now it is mostly farms and vineyards. is there any truth to this?

2. how are the schools in Holly Springs and/or Wake Forest? we heard that one child can be at one school and another bused to a school 1-2 hours away. please assist.

3. as a builder, my husband has been taking on mostly home improvement jobs. is there a need for his talents there? as said before we are concerned that people may shun him from trying to make a living since we are from NY (again no offense, but living on eastern long island is like a different state than those who live in NYC - this is a misconception when people learn we are from NY.)

4. we have alot of beaches, some off the Atlantic and others that are from the bay. are there any beaches there (besides the coast)? from a lake?

5. we are looking for an area where there are kids. we have a 13 year old and a 3 month old (and more to come).

6. have hurricanes hit this far inland? what about tornado activity?

Thank you for all of your input. Any additional information would be greatly appreciated. God Bless.

NY folks are OK here

Good contractors are needed but illegals have really cut into profits.

Hurricanes & tornadoes are not frequent but have hit here. Big tornado in North Raleigh in 1988. Hurricane Fran got up into Raleigh a few years ago with much damage.

Wake County schools are generally good. Reassignments and busing have caused much concern the last few years.

Beaches are a few hours away.

No real public transportation if that's an issue.

There are many suburban towns that might feel like Suffolk County if you like a bit of space.

Bussed 1-2 hours away is an exaggeration...but bussing to schools about 30 minutes away is not uncommon in Wake County. NC'ers aren't "discriminated" against" in NC really, I lived in NC (originally from and now have returned to Upstate NY...the REAL other state in NY) for 13 years and found native NC'ers to be much more willing to make new friends than many Long Islanders in the area who seemed to only want to be surrounded by other Long Islanders (just an observation). There are no natural lakes in NC, atleast not anywhere around Wake County. There are the man-made Falls Lake and Jordan Lake, both of which have public beaches and (when they aren't too low) allow boating. Also Lake Gaston up on the NC/VA border. The ocean is 2-3 hours away. the Raleigh area took a direct hit from Hurricane Fran in 1996 and it caused A LOT of damage with tons of trees falling down and spawned several tornadoes. Hurricanes don't usually cause that much damage to the triangle area but if they make landfall anywhere in the Carolina's, you will usually see some severe weather from them.

A yearly levy on the current value of your car. It's billed to you by your county about 3 months after you register initially or renew your license plate.

Rate depends on county.

If you don't pay, DMV will block renewals.
