I’ve been here in the area for a while, and this strikes me as the earliest I’ve seen the Forsythia bloom. Like a month earlier than average. I’m not talking daffodils, which seem right on time. Was it the record setting rainfall? I put out some new grass seed the weekend before last, and now with these yellow blossoms, I’m already worried about trying to prevent crabgrass...

I think we already have crabgrass. Something unwelcome is in the backyard.

I haven't noticed forsythia...will have to look tomorrow.

Heard today the last time we had a stretch of 6 straight days with no precip was exactly 6 months ago.

Frosts in March, and sometimes icy weather, is not too unusual in N.C.

However - the forecast for the next week calls for mostly sunny skies. It feels like we are setting up for an early spring. The tips of the branches are turning red in Charlotte/Gastonia, just before they leaf out.

This is my second winter. I think last winter was a bit weird, because it got pretty warm sometime around February and then there was a cold snap right after that. I remember my star magnolia bloomed in February and then got covered with snow, it was very pretty. My winter jasmine is in full bloom right now, and star magnolia is about to bloom.

Anyway, I thought this was a normal spring, but good to know your guys think it's a bit early. I just don't want slugs to come back just yet... yuk. I did see and heard frogs though. Which made me wonder if the snakes are back... obviously their food is back, so you would think they'd be back too.

If feels normal to me. First tree in my yard usually blooms mid-March and it seems to be on track.

Facebook turns out to be an effective measure of trends. While we've had our fair share of late season wintery weather, by and large in my fourteen Winters in the Triangle where we are is pretty much where we almost always are.

I still find it surprising just how early the winter season ends down here, I feel like each year it's a little bit earlier. But Facebook posts going back to 2009 reveal the truth that it's right on time.

I thought for sure we were experiencing False Spring and would soon see a Second Winter, but it seems like we may skip Second Winter this year.

Yes, what will make this spring feel quicker paced is receiving several uninterrupted days of sun after the heavy rains of February. We will probably enter the "Gee, the grass needs mowing again after just 1 week?" phase, faster than we would like.

Forsythia often booms as early a January after a few days in a row of warm weather. Best place to see it is along Wade Avenue on both sides of the Oberlin Road bridge.
