Is there an equal chance at being assigned to any of those locations? They definitely tend towards west/south Wake, with North Raleigh being the outlier. If there's an equal chance, then I'd say Apex as well -- with the chance that you could draw the short straw and end up at North Raleigh.
Brier Creek isn't a bad trip to any, but only really convenient to North Raleigh. The toll on said road is $3.60 end to end.
South Cary / west Raleigh would be my first thought for minimizing distance, though traffic might be worse. I imagine right now might be a better than usual time to bargain on rent near NCSU (generally southwest Raleigh).
I find your comment about Brier Creek strange. We can get to many locations in 30 minutes or less. Durham, Chapel Hill, Cary, downtown Raleigh, etc.
North Raleigh is central to just about everywhere...but housing prices are going through the roof in this entire area. Apartment rental monthly costs are not much cheaper than a mortgage payment if not more.
I agree. When we moved to Brier Creek, everytime DH asked "how long will it take us to get there," the answer was "25 minutes or less."
It became a bit of a household joke for us.
7 minutes is our joke about Durham. Every single place we put on a map used to say 7 minutes. We met a couple from Brooklyn who moved here at the same time as us, and when we mentioned our 7 minute theory they started laughing and said they were wondering why is everything 5-7 minutes away.
The OP was not asking about Durham, but about commuting to Holly Springs and Fuquay, which are 50-60 mile round trips (granted, fairly benign traffic).
Obviously, Brier is the closest bit of Raleigh to Durham; it's the only part that crosses into Durham. But it's not where I'd want to live if there were a 60% chance of commuting to South Wake.

OP asked about North Raleigh etc. Brier Creek is NW so maybe not interesting. It's a good neighborhood. Maybe Apex is better for the OP.
Moving from Wilmington to the Triangle area next month. Store assignment will not be known at that time. Could possibly be in north Raleigh, Cary, Apex, Holly Springs, or Fuquay Varina. Any advice on where to start looking for possible housing would be greatly appreciated!
OP doesn't know yet where the job is. In a separate post they specifically asked about Brier Creek.
But I do agree that Apex is a good choice if North Raleigh is not an option.
