Hard to believe, but he is stepping down. I'm an ABC fan, but still wish him well in his retirement. He has certainly made Carolina games and press conferences entertaining over the years - gosh darn it!
This is deserving of it's own thread for sure; as I said in the "discussions" thread...
I can't decide how I feel about this. Haven't had time to process yet. I think it is his time to retire and I guess my final reaction will depend on who comes into replace him.
I have a feeling there will be a "holder spot" a-la Bill Guthridge (RIP) for a couple seasons until the next "legacy coach" is in place.
I am NOT on the Tony Bennett bandwagon.
I have some friends and associates who want UNC to try to get Shaka Smart from Marquette and were upset that the timing didn't work out for him to come from Texas directly to Carolina.

I mean it’s not like Shaka was setting the world on fire at Texas. I would have been happy for him to come a few years ago but I’m not so sure now.
I don’t think they’ll do a placeholder, at least not on purpose . Dean Smith retired in the fall right before things got going specifically so they would have to go to Gut. They have plenty of time now.
I think Gut was a last minute fill-in. Coach Smith wanted Phil Ford, but he had a DUI a month before Coach Smith’s retirement. That left Gut. I don’t think UNC wanted to go with a lame duck coach then, and I don’t expect them to go with one now. Tony Bennett is like the antithesis to UNC basketball, so that’s a non-starter. Do cursory calls to the big names (Few, Stevens, Donovan), then go after the next rung (Holtmann, Oats, Musselman).
His press conference was heart wrenching. Brutally honest to a fault.
I was holding out hope it was a terrible April Fools joke until then....
