Lets not pretend that when you travel in Durham, people let their guard down. Its not rocket surgery.

Maybe you do. People are careful but it's not like every single place in Durham is choke full of boogeymen. I go to REI in that Southpoint mall area and never had a single problem. Unfortunately, it seems to me she was parked in a less crowded area of that side of the mall (note that the Nordstrom Rack, REI are on the other side of the Southpoint mall... I do not think it is actually part of the Mall?? I am not sure). She also said she was born and raised here in Durham. She is a mom of what seems like a baby who doesn't sleep very well. I am pretty sure she was tired and maybe a bit happy with a brief moment of quietness. It just seems like truly scary situation, and people who live in Durham do not usually expect something like this to happen somewhere like Southpoint mall area.

I am glad she is okay, and it seems like they found her car... although spray painted black.

What makes Southport shady? Have you been reading crime reports?

Sure sorry to hear this. I live catacorner across town and rarely go to Southpoint. I've done service work in some of the worst neighborhoods in town & wouldn't have been uneasy at Southpoint before now. I will be mindful when I go there in the future.

I don't think Southpoint was a stranger to crime. This is why it's always weird that people always reference the Southpoint area as one of the safer in Durham. I'm sure there's much more that doesn't make the news, but here's what I found in a quick search:

https://www.wral.com/body-found-insi...mall/19002886/

https://www.wral.com/two-durham-wome...rker/18296812/

https://www.wral.com/man-arrested-ch...tore/18033264/

https://www.wral.com/woman-66-injure...ects/15227542/

https://www.wral.com/three-arrested-...mall/12087159/

https://www.wral.com/news/local/story/1088002/

And before everyone jumps on me, I'm not saying this doesn't happen in other Triangle towns/cities. In fact just a few months ago a dead body was found in a car at the McDonalds in West Cary.

The first article was a suicide, and the others reach back 15 years. Wow... SUPER dangerous indeed.

Did you read my last sentence? If you searched Crabtree you'd probably find 10x the crime (I won't even go to that mall). Just saying that Southpoint isn't exactly a stranger to crime.

I did read it, and I agree with you. But if you have to go back 15 years to find 5 incidents, I'm thinking that's not so bad. Certainly not enough to be considered "shady" in my opinion.

All depends on what you’re used to.
