The two former head coaches of UNC men's basketball have a new honor bestowed on them: the North Carolina Department of Transportation will include their names on parts of I-40 in Orange and Durham counties. The portion of the highway between exits 266 and 270 (the interchanges with NC 86 and U.S. 15-501, respectively) will be renamed the Roy Williams Highway, while the stretch between exits 270 and 273 (N.C. 54 entering Chapel Hill) will be christened the Dean Smith Highway.

I was at UNC-chapel Hill from 83-87. The home games were thrilling. Somehow or another, I got an invite to a basketball party and met Dean Smith and was able to shake his hand for 2 seconds... Wow. Even more of a wow, was that I played pool a lot, and once found myself playing at a table next to Micheal Jordan where he was behind me and lining up for a shot. Good days.
A well merited honor for both coaches, will we ever see the like again?

I suspect either I-85 or NC-147 in Durham will get renamed within the next few years for Coach K. As a native VT Hokie, I actively despise Duke, but love Coach K and he has clearly been dat dude for longer than even I’ve been alive.
I'm fine with Smith and Williams, and I would support K and Valvano too, notwithstanding the NCAA problems during Valvano's tenure.
