I don't recall ever hearing about celebratory gunfire around here until a few years ago when that woman was shot downtown in Raleigh on New Year's. Apparently there were reports of gunfire there again this year too in addition to what happened in Durham. It seems to be par for the course now on July 4th and New Year's in this area which is just sad.

Truth be told, really didn't know this was a thing outside of the Middle East/former Eastern Bloc countries.
There was what I am presuming to be some semi auto gunfire on Friday out in the hinterlands around Heritage

Definitely is a newer phenomenon. I don't know if it's newcomers bringing this "tradition" with them or if it's just a nationwide trend. I think the fireworks are a newer thing too.
I was recently reminded of the (electric) candles in the windows decorations that used to be really popular in NC. Don't see that much any more either. It's all blazing lights and synchronized music and what not. I like the lights (not so much the music), but celebrations change. Sometimes for the better and sometimes not.
We stayed tucked in safe and sound in our house.
