Definitely is a newer phenomenon. I don't know if it's newcomers bringing this "tradition" with them or if it's just a nationwide trend. I think the fireworks are a newer thing too.
I was recently reminded of the (electric) candles in the windows decorations that used to be really popular in NC. Don't see that much any more either. It's all blazing lights and synchronized music and what not. I like the lights (not so much the music), but celebrations change. Sometimes for the better and sometimes not.
We stayed tucked in safe and sound in our house.

I’m sure a few people still do them but it used to be the most popular type of Christmas lights. I don’t see them much any more. Wish ‘celebratory gunfire’ would stop trending too.

More people with guns are wanting occasions to show they have them. It means they are strong. Tough. Not to be messed with. Rightly or wrongly they are reacting to societal stresses.
